Literary Agents

LITERARY AGENTS, HOW TO CONNECT WITH ONE?

Literary agents act as intermediaries between the writer and publishers. They are also in charge of finding the appropriate publisher for the work, reviewing contracts and defending the rights of the author.

It is very difficult to get a major publisher to publish a work unless it has won one of its literary awards. Likewise, the possibilities increase if the work has been presented by a literary agent.

Although having a literary agent does not presuppose that the work will be published, it is also true that it makes the whole process more efficient.

STEPS TO FOLLOW

First of all, it is very important that what you send is correctly written and without spelling mistakes. If you don’t do it like that, he probably won’t waste time finishing reading it.

a) Prior selection

You should then find a literary agent dedicated to the subject of the work you want to publish. For this it is good that you consult his website or also, in case of doubts, contact him by email or by phone.

b) What you should send to the literary agent

Nor is it convenient to send the manuscript directly. Before sending it, it is better to send you a presentation in advance (maximum of about 250 words).

You will also explain what the work consists of. You will also include your presentation (name, profession, published works if you have them, etc.). Likewise, you will indicate your contact information and a brief synopsis of the work.

At the same time, it is interesting to include an estimate of the typical market to which your work is directed. And although it is not essential, it is interesting to include an index of your work.

They may also take time to respond to you. Do not despair. Wait at least a month before contacting the agent again.

If he is not interested, you can try another agency or also submit the work to a literary contest.

If, on the contrary, they answer affirmatively, send the manuscript, (which you will have previously registered in the Intellectual Property Registry), to the contact person in Word or PDF format as indicated.

Of course, send it also correctly revised and without spelling mistakes. Not doing it this way makes your chances of getting interested disappear.

Literary agents usually charge a percentage that ranges between 15 and 20% on the benefits you obtain with your publication. Usually they should not charge any amount before the work is published.

If they get a publisher to publish the work for you, they will make you sign a contract (it can only be for the specific work or for all your works).

Although these contracts are usually standard, we suggest that if you have doubts before signing you consult a professional.
